On October 2nd, the CESH reference group—comprising researchers, students, teachers, and representatives from faculty leadership—met to discuss key competencies for sustainable health.
We had the privilege to meet with the 28 new participants enrolled in the MIDWIZE program recently. The focus of the program is to enhance the successful implementation of evidence-based midwife-led improvements in maternal and child health care in Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.
Annette Kanyunyuzi, Senior Midwize Ambassador and President of The National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU), is currently presenting the Midwize project at the ICM Regional Conference in Rwanda. Exciting times ahead for midwifery!
The Building Capacity for Sustainable Development in Fragile States (SDGCap) project has been implemented during 2021-2023 with financial support from Sida to foster sustainable development in Africa through health and well-being, focusing on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia, Uganda
In 2021, Makerere University in Uganda and Karolinska Institutet established the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health based on their strong partnership. The Centre aims to develop capacity and mobilise actions to drive the agenda for sustainable health.
Eight MIDWIZE participants from Uganda presented their projects during our final seminar held on-site in Kampala in May 2024.

Climate crisis demands urgent action. This requires everyone to rethink their current ways of working and teaching. How is academia innovating to provide relevant training for future professionals to manage these complex challenges?
Showcasing the Center's continuous development, their communication team has developed a new website that has a more user-friendly design, improved accessibility, search optimisation, social media integration, and simple navigation to allow target audience to find exactly what they need.
In February 2024, a delegation from Karolinska Institutet led by Vice President Martin Bergö visited Makerere University in Uganda, a long-term partner of Karolinska Institutet. Martin Bergö was genuinely impressed by the commitment and results arising from this collaboration.
At the Global Conversation webinar on the 5th of September 2023, experts in the field discussed the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on health, specifically focusing on extreme weather events such as flooding.

A 3-day workshop was held at the end of August at Karolinska Institutet (KI) with colleagues from KI and Makerere University, working together at the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health.
The following workshop was targeted at key M&E and project implementation employees of federal and state government authorities who benefited from the previous year's workshop. The workshop was one of SDGcaps' capacity-building initiatives, and Benadir Innovation supports with its execution.
The SDGCap innovation commenced on August 19th and concluded on October 2nd. A duration of precisely 6 weeks with a total of 15 participants actively engaged in the program. Among them was Abdirisak Mohamed Hassan who said:
“The SDGCap Innovation course transformed my problem-solving approach, teaching me to find opportunities within challenges.
In an article published in the BMC Global and Public Health, the CESH argues that three transformations are necessary to achieve sustainable health and concludes the article with a call to action from a wide range of stakeholders.

In early May, the MIDWIZE conference was held in Kampala, bringing together stakeholders in the field of maternal and child health. MIDWIZE is a framework to guide quality improvements in midwife led care.
